This is an excellent, subtle critique on the media - This famous, accomplished cinematographer thought he was sitting down for another softball interview with a prestigious publication.
Issac has excellent interview strategy and skills, he's been one of my favorites and as an interviewer myself, there's something to learn here - he was obviously very researched but didn’t necessarily play that hand. He let his subject walk through his own hoops (or hang his own rope in this case).
This is an established cinematographer, someone I could learn a lot from. He shot Heat! But holy shit, was his entire career built on that lack of intention or meaning?
Last, bringing up the Nazi propaganda film is just a bomb drop. Separating art from the artist is a tricky thing and this cinematographer fell right into it.
Last last, work is the work. God knows we all need more of it in this game. I guess I feel lucky to not having to talk myself into something like this.
